Current Ethical Issues in International Tax Practice
This panel will discuss ethics and related issues regarding audit summonses including duties of confidentiality, communication, and privilege and the complications that can arise cross-border. Additionally, this panel will consider ethical issues that surface in the context of correctiong prior errors, including conflicts of interest and confidentiality, and their potential tension with client strategy and business advising. Finally, this panel will look at the emerging IRS, tax authority, and judicial guidance governing the use of AI in tax practice and will discuss the ethics implications for tax practice where tax advisors rely on the written work and research of others within the firm
Joining Caroline will be moderator Diane Ring of Boston College Law School and fellow panelists Linda Galler of Hofstra University and Scott Michel of Caplin & Drysdale.
About Caroline
Caroline is a former Acting Assistant Attorney General of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division and a founder of the firm’s Washington, DC office. Her practice focuses on federal, state, and cross-border civil tax controversies, including representation in sensitive audits, administrative appeals, and litigation, providing tax advice, conducting internal investigations, and representing individuals and entities in criminal tax investigations and prosecutions. She also serves as a consulting and testifying expert witness and an independent mediator in tax disputes.
