With A Little Help From Our Friends – Cross-Border Criminal Tax Investigations

April 12 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm CEST

On April 12, 2024, Caroline D. Ciraolo will co-chair a session on cross-border criminal tax investigations during the 24th Annual U.S. and Europe Tax Practice Trends Conference hosted by the American Bar Association in Munich, Germany.

Event Description
Countries around the world are recognizing the value of cooperation and collaboration to combat transnational criminal tax offenses. Governments and their respective tax authorities are leveraging treaty relationships and using a wide range of tools to gather information, documents, and evidence located outside their borders to investigate crimes that occur across jurisdictions. Practitioners representing clients caught in these investigations need to identify the various stakeholders, engage with local professionals, understand the foreign rules regarding data privacy, preservation, and protection, manage public relations, communicate with law enforcement and regulatory authorities, navigate red notices and extradition risks, and negotiate with multiple jurisdictions.

The panelists will present the government’s view of cross border investigations as well as best practices from counsel for the defense.
