Faced with substantial tax gaps, aggressive tax avoidance, and abusive tax structures, tax authorities around the world are increasing civil and criminal tax enforcement efforts. These efforts include the exchange of information, informal collaboration, and formal joint audits and investigations with foreign treaty partners. This session will discuss the scope of EOI provisions in tax treaties and other bilateral agreements, standards of review and defenses to such requests, procedures for cross-border audits and investigations, and possible paths to resolutions.
