Maxwell Brown’s practice focuses on white-collar criminal defense. He also represents individuals and businesses in tax controversies and commercial litigation.

Max’s pro bono practice has included representing witnesses in criminal investigations and an individual suing the City of New York and police officers for excessive force.

Prior to joining Kostelanetz LLP, Max was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell for over four years, where he represented financial institutions, individuals, and corporate clients from a variety of industries in complex civil litigation, including commercial disputes, consumer class actions, and employment actions.

Max received his B.A. cum laude and with distinction in the History Major from Yale University, where he also received the Gerald R. Ford Scholar-Athlete award as a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Max received his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he was a Hamilton Fellow with a full merit scholarship, James Kent Scholar, editor of the Columbia Law Review, and recipient of the Young B. Smith prize for highest proficiency in the law of torts and the Whitney North Seymour medal for greatest promise in trial advocacy. During law school, Max spent the summer of 2015 as a legal intern in the chambers of Judge Valerie Caproni of the Southern District of New York.

Prior to law school, Max worked in Seoul and Beijing as a teacher and with an education startup.
