Podcast: Surviving the IRS — Innocent Spouse Relief and Other Solutions

Partner Megan Brackney was recently interviewed on the Financially Ever After podcast to talk about tax compliance issues related to divorce and widowhood, including issues such as innocent spouse relief, IRS audits, and handling other marriage-related tax troubles.

In this episode, hosted by Stacy Francis of Francis Financial, a wealth management and financial planning firm, Megan discusses a variety of personal and small business tax issues divorcees or widows may face. She draws upon her years of experience to educate listeners on how to communicate with the IRS, what they can do if they receive a notice from the IRS, and how to understand their rights as taxpayers.

Megan also explains innocent spouse relief and who is likely to qualify for it. She notes that taxpayers facing tax liabilities from an ex-spouse’s wrongdoing may not have to pay if they qualify for such relief.

Megan and Stacy also discuss issues facing small business owners, such as payroll tax fraud and how that affects the standard statute of limitations on business tax matters. They also include information on estate planning, payment plan options, and the impacts of not properly handling personal tax troubles.
