Kostelanetz partner Bryan Skarlatos discussed the latest developments in tax enforcement trends, following the NYU Tax Controversy Forum earlier this summer.
Bryan noted, from a tax controversy perspective, that the market for tax representation and legal services is likely to shift dramatically in 2025, and practitioners’ biggest challenges going forward will be to adjust to market demands as enforcement priorities shift.
On the upheaval due to reductions in IRS staff, Bryan said, “I know that the whole idea these days is to try to do more with less. Hopefully, the IRS can do that because you can’t get rid of tax compliance. And with compliance comes some level of tax enforcement.” Clients and practitioners need to bear with the IRS in these uncertain times, he cautioned.
Bryan noted that it will take time for the IRS to reset, and practitioners and their clients will eventually become accustomed to interacting with reduced staff at the IRS.
