Caroline D. Ciraolo participates in a panel titled “Targeting the Tax Professional: A Review of the Increased Civil and Criminal Tax Enforcement Against Attorneys, Accountants, and other Financial Advisors” at the 41st Annual Florida Bar/FICPA International Tax Conference. CPE credit is offered at this event.
Panel Description:
Tax enforcement is on the rise and professionals seem to be a focus. IRS, DOJ and the Senate Finance Committee have aggressively investigated tax fraud schemes involving attorneys, law firms, accountants, bankers and others who have facilitated – knowingly or unwittingly – allegedly abusive transactions through the creation, implementation or defense of structures and financial transactions designed to commit and conceal tax offenses. This panel will examine the tools used by the government in these sorts of actions, including the assessment of promoter penalties, the filing of injunctions, the issuance of grand jury subpoenas for what would otherwise be considered privileged communications, the gathering of foreign evidence, the use of search warrants, and the possibility of criminal indictment.
Panelists:
- Caroline D. Ciraolo, Partner, Kostelanetz LLP
- Jeffrey A. Neiman, Partner, Marcus Neiman & Rashbaum, LLP
- Patricio Gonzalez, Senior Investigator for Tax at the United States Senate Committee on Finance
- Elizabeth C. Hadden, Deputy Division Counsel/Deputy Associate Chief Counsel, Criminal Tax, Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service
